            Need to Know

            The Sympathetic Nervous System and Vascular Health | Drs. Anna Stanhewicz & Jody Greaney 

            Anna Stanhewicz, Ph.D., and Jody Greaney, Ph.D., FACSM, are scientists at Pennsylvania State University. They have been studying the process through which the sympathetic nervous system communicates with the vascular system during total body heating and cooling, particularly in aging adults. 

            As humans age, this communication process becomes less efficient and can cause an increase in cardiovascular risk. Drs. Stanhewicz and Greaney are studying this process in attempt to determine intervention strategies that may mitigate the cardiovascular risk.

            An International Consensus Statement on Physical Activity and Mental Heath Just Released

            Exercise and Sports Science Australia, American Collegee乐彩app官方下载旧版 of Sports Medicine, British Association of Sport and Exercise Science, and Sport and Exercise Science New Zealand collaborated to develop a brief statement titled The Role of Sport, Exercise, and Physical Activity in Closing the Life Expectancy Gap for People with Mental Illness.  The statement discusses the need for holistic treatment for those with mental illness including physical health care, which is often lacking when mental illness is the focus of treatment.             Consensus Statement Published from the 19th Annual Team Physician Consensus Conference

            ACSM is pleased to announce the release of the annual Team Physician Consensus Conference statement, which is a blend of research evidence and expert consensus providing guidance and teaching tools for physicians working in the sports medicine field, regardless of geographical location or level of team or athlete.

            Marcas Bamman, Ph.D., FACSM

            Meet Marcas Bamman, professor in regenerative and translational medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and director of UAB's Center for Exercise Medicine. Among his other roles, Marcas serves as director for two NIH research resources, principal investigator for five randomized exercise trials, interim director of the Birmingham/Atlanta VA Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center, founding director of the 77-site National Exercise Clinical Trials Network and a mentor. He is also chairing ACSM’s upcoming World Congress on the Basic Science of Exercise in Regenerative Medicine.
